Setting up the iPhone/iPad using Exchange ActiveSync

(iPhone/iPad firmware v. 2.0 and higher only)

Introduction

This procedure walks through configuring an iPhone/iPad for synchronization with your Thoughtbus mailbox via Exchange ActiveSync. The screenshots are from an iPhone, but the iPad screens are almost identical.

ActiveSync will wirelessly synchronize your mail folders, your contacts, and your calendar with your iPhone/iPad.

Note that only one ActiveSync account can be set up on each device, unless iOS version 4 or newer is running on the iPhone/iPad, as version 4 and newer support multiple Exchange ActiveSync accounts.

Installing pre-requisite Apple update for iOS version 4.0

1.      Determine if your iPhone is running version 4.0 of the iPhone OS by tapping 'Settings' from the main iPhone screen, then tapping 'General', then 'About', then looking for 'Version' in the list shown there.

2.      If your iPhone’s Version is 4.0, please download and install the Apple-provided update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3398

3.      Please remember to power down your iPhone and then power it up again after the installation of this update; you can do this by depressing the Sleep/Wake button at the top of the phone for about 10 seconds, moving the slider to “Off”, and then turning the device back on with the Sleep/Wake button

Setting up the mail Account

1.      On the iPhone/iPad, choose “Settings”, and then choose “Mail, Contacts, Calendars”.

2.      Choose “Add Account”

3.      Choose type “Microsoft Exchange”:

4.      On the next screen, enter your email address, and then your UPN Login ID.  This is the login ID that looks like an email address (with an “@” sign).  This is the same ID that you would use to log into Outlook or Outlook Web Access.  You can also use the old format if you know your “NT4” login ID, by typing in “ENOMIA\username, where username is your NT4 ID (in Entourage, the NT4 ID is what you place in the “account” field).

Note: Depending on your iOS version, you may see a 'Domain' field on this screen. Please ensure this field is left blank.

The “Description” field (not shown) is arbitrary, and can be left as-is.  After filling out the information, tap “Next”.

5.      A new field for “Server“ will pop up on the screen.  For this, enter “mail.thoughtbus.com”, and tap “Next”.  The iPhone/iPad will verify your account information and if everything has been set up correctly, you’ll be all set.

  1. Your email, calendar, and contact information will now be synchronized with the “Mail”, “Contacts”, and “Calendar” apps on the iPhone/iPad.  For additional options such as how far back to synchronize calendar events, and how many recent emails to display, go back to “Settings à Mail, Contacts, Calendar.”
