Setting up Windows Mail for Thoughtbus – using IMAP

Introduction

This procedure walks through the steps required for Windows Mail – the mail client included with Windows Vista - to connect to the Thoughtbus Exchange service via IMAP and SMTP.

IMPORTANT: In the following procedure, whenever you see "username@domain.xyz" in any of the screenshots, you must use your UPN login.  This is the same ID that you use to log into Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007 and takes the form username@domain.xyz, which is not necessarily the same as your primary email address.

Setting up the Windows Mail Client

1.       When you first start the Windows Mail client without any email accounts configured, you will see the following screen.  Select Tools à Accounts.

6.       In the “Incoming e-mail server type” drop-down box, you’ll have the option of choosing POP3, IMAP, or HTTP.  The HTTP option does not work and is no longer supported, so it’s unclear as to why it’s even presented as an option.  We would recommend selecting IMAP rather than POP, as it allows for synchronization of Inbox subfolders (instead of just the Inbox folder).

Your incoming and outgoing servers should be set as imail.thoughtbus.com.  Click the checkbox that says “Outgoing server requires authentication”.  Click “Next”.

7.       Here, enter your UPN Login, type in your password, and click “Next”.

8.       Finally, you’ll see this screen:

9.       You’re done!  Click “Finish”, and if your username and password have been entered correctly, your folder list will be synchronized and you’ll see a new set of IMAP folders called “imail.thoughtbus.com”:
