Setting up
Outlook Express 6.0 for Thoughtbus – using IMAP
Introduction
This
procedure walks through the steps required for Outlook Express 6.0 to connect
to the Thoughtbus Exchange service (2003, 2007, or 2010) via IMAP and SMTP.
IMPORTANT:
In the
following procedure, whenever you see "username@domain.xyz" in any of
the screenshots, you must use your UPN login. This is the same ID
that you use to log into Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007 and takes the form username@domain.xyz,
which is not necessarily the same as your primary email address.
Setting
up the Outlook Express Account
- Start
Outlook Express via the ‘Start’ menu. It is installed by default on
Windows XP and also with the installation of Internet Explorer. You should
see it in the main ‘Programs’ menu within the ‘Start’ menu. (If you do not
see an icon on this menu, the program itself is most often found at
‘c:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe’.)
- Within
Outlook Express’s main window, select the ‘Tools/Accounts’ menu option.
The following window appears:

(Note that the specific accounts that appear depend
on what has been setup within Outlook Express previously.)
- Press
the ‘Add’ button, and select ‘Mail…’ from the pop-up menu. This displays
the ‘Internet Connection Wizard’, where you first enter your display name
for emails you will send with Outlook Express:

- Enter
your name, and then press ‘Next’. You are prompted for you e-mail
address. This should be your full SMTP e-mail address that you were
assigned:

- Pressing
the ‘Next’ button brings you to the ‘E-mail Server Names’ window. Select
‘IMAP’ from the drop-down, and specify the incoming and outgoing servers
as ‘imail.Thoughtbus.com’ as shown here, then press ‘Next’:

- In
the next window, you’ll enter your Thoughtbus account name. This should
be your UPN login, which is the same ID you use to log in using Outlook
2003 or Outlook 2007, and looks like username@domain.xyz.

- Press
‘Finish’ on the ‘Congratulations’ window; your account has been defined.
- Press
‘Properties’ with the newly created account selected in the ‘Internet
Accounts’ window, then select the ‘Servers’ tab from the
‘imail.Thoughtbus.com Properties’ window:

- The
checkbox labeled ‘My server requires authentication’ must be checked in
order for you to send outgoing emails. (The authentication settings for outgoing
mail are identical to those for the incoming mail server.) Once this
is done, press the ‘OK’ button.
- Press
‘Close’ on the ‘Internet Accounts’ window, and the following message then
appears:

- Answer
‘Yes’, and the following progress window appears:

- Once
the folders are downloaded, the following window appears:

- Press
‘OK’ to accept the default folders.
- You
should now see an ‘imail.Thoughtbus.com’ node in your ‘Folders’ tree, in
the left pane of the main Outlook Express window:

- Outlook
Express is now fully configured. You can click the ‘Inbox’ of the
‘imail.Thoughtbus.com’ node to review your new email messages. You can
press the ‘Create Mail’ button to enter an email to be sent out.
(end
of procedure.)
