Setting Up Microsoft
ActiveSync for PocketPC or SmartPhone
Introduction
This
procedure walks through the steps required for your PocketPC or SmartPhone to
use Microsoft ActiveSync to connect to the Thoughtbus email service for
synchronization of email and calendar information.
Pre-requisites
You will
need the following items to get started:
-
PocketPC or
SmartPhone – running Windows Mobile 2002 or 2003 software. (Note that
PocketPC 3.0 and previous versions of PocketPC and Windows CE software will not
synchronize with Thoughtbus – they can only synchronize with a PC.)
-
Thoughtbus
mailbox with ActiveSync service enabled. (Send email to support@Thoughtbus.com to enable
ActiveSync service.)
-
PC running
Windows 2000 or XP, and:
o
Outlook 2000,
2002, or 2003 connected to your Thoughtbus mailbox
-
The latest
Microsoft ActiveSync installation media – you can download this from Microsoft
ActiveSync Download - on www.microsoft.com
-
USB cable to
connect PocketPC to your PC. (Do not connect until ActiveSync is installed
on the PC!)
-
Active Internet
connection to PocketPC (and your PC of course).
Part
1 - Installing the ActiveSync software
- Download
and install the latest ActiveSync software from Microsoft
ActiveSync Download - on www.microsoft.com to your PC.
- ActiveSync
starts automatically after the installation completes.
- Connect the
PocketPC to your PC via the USB cable.
- ActiveSync
detects your PocketPC and establishes a connection to it. The following
window displays:

- Select
‘Yes’ and press ‘Next’. The following window appears. For this procedure,
we’ll go with the ‘Standard Partnership’, and press ‘Next’:

- The
following window appears now. Here’s where we’ll specify that we’re going
to synchronize with Exchange Server and ActiveSync (then press ‘Next’):

- Next,
you’ll enter the information to access your Exchange Server. (Note that
your ‘username’ here is generally the part of your primary email address
to the left of the ‘@’. It’s always the ‘NT4 Login Name’ specified
in the User Properties page of the Thoughtbus Administration Console.) The
‘server name’ will always be ‘mail.thoughtbus.com’, and the ‘domain’ will
always be ‘ENOMIA’ here:

- Next
you’ll specify the information you’ll synchronize with the Thoughtbus
Exchange Server. You can choose to synchronize your Contacts, Calendar,
and/or Inbox:

- The next
window appears to be a disclaimer for synchronization of the Pocket PC
with Exchange Server. However, it just applies to the first
synchronization. Depending on whether you want to save the data currently
on your Pocket PC, select the appropriate option:

- The next
few windows deal with synchronizing the Windows Mobile device with your PC
– not with Exchange Server. Choose a name for your Windows Mobile device
and enter it in the next window:

- Check the
check-boxes of the items you want to synchronize with your desktop
computer. (Note that ‘Notes’ and ‘Tasks’ from Microsoft Outlook are listed
here, because they were not selected for Internet-based synchronization with
Exchange Server.)

- The next
window is the ‘Setup Complete’ window:

- When you
press ‘Finish’, ActiveSync will start synchronizing the Pocket PC with the
desktop computer:

- When you
look on the Pocket PC, in the ‘Start / ActiveSync’ view, you’ll see that
‘Synchronize with Windows PC’ is running, and when ActiveSync finishes, it
displays the results of the desktop synchronization.
- In order
to synchronize with the Thoughtbus Exchange Server, press the ‘Sync’
button in the middle of the screen on the Pocket PC. It will then commence
synchronizing.
- At this
point, your PocketPC/SmartPhone ActiveSync configuration is setup. If
synchronization does not succeed, please re-try this procedure, and if
that fails, please contact Thoughtbus Support.
