Setting Up a Treo 600, 650, or 700p smartphone with Thoughtbus Hosted Exchange

 

Introduction

This procedure walks through the steps required for your Treo smartphone to connect to the Thoughtbus email service for wireless synchronization of email, calendar, address-book, tasks, and memo-pad information.

 

Pre-requisites

You will need the following items to get started:

-          Treo 600 or 650 smartphone

-          USB cable

-          Wireless Data plan from one of the carriers designated for your Treo model (i.e. T-Mobile, Verizon, etc.)

-          Thoughtbus mailbox with Pylon Anywhere service designated

-          PC running Windows 2000 or XP with USB port, and:

o        Outlook 2000, 2002, or 2003 connected to your Thoughtbus mailbox

-          Treo Synchronization software CD (ships with the Treo 600 and 650).

 

 

Part 1 – Registering your Treo smartphone and Installing Pylon Anywhere Client

  1. Install the Treo Synchronization software onto your PC – we recommend configuring it to synchronize with Outlook. (Note: This installation will include a 'hot-sync' of the Treo.)
  2. If you have previously setup the Pylon Anywhere software on this PC, then use the 'Add/Remove Programs' link in the Control Panel to remove it.
  3. If the Treo is disconnected from the PC, then connect it, using the USB cable that came with the Treo.
  4. Navigate your web browser to https://pylon.Thoughtbus.com:

  1. Enter 'ENOMIA\' followed by your Thoughtbus username – this is generally the left part of your email address, to the left of the '@'.
  2. Enter your password and press the 'Go!' button.
  3. The following window appears:

 

  1. Verify your time zone, then check the check-box indicating the time zone is correct.
  2. Verify your City, State, Zip Code, First Name, and Last Name – if any are not correct please update them here. 
  3. Press the 'Next' button. The following window appears:

  1. Check the check-box next to 'Palm OS-Based Handheld' and press 'Next'. The following window appears:

  1. Press the 'NEXT' button to begin the download of Pylon Anywhere to your PC. (After installing on your PC, it will download to your Treo.)

People with Windows XP Service Pack 2 – Please see these instructions if pressing the 'Install' button results in an 'Error on page' message:

  1. The following window will appear:

  1. Depending on your PC's Internet connection speed, this download could take up to a half-hour to complete. 
  2. Do you get this error once the download completes?

If so, you will need to use Task Manager to terminate the 'msiexec.exe' processes, then go 'back' on your web browser and re-start the download. (Sometimes the Treo Synchronization software installation leaves these 'msiexec.exe' programs running.)

 

  1. Next, you will see the following window.  Click “Install”…

  1. When you see the following screen, choose “Run”:

 

  1. If you see this screen:

…press “Run” again.

 

  1. Once the download is finished, the setup begins, and soon the following window appears:

  1. Press the 'Install' button to continue. The following window may appear:

  1. If it does, then select the user configuration that you want to use to synchronize with your Thoughtbus mailbox and press ‘Ok'.
  2. Once the installation completes, the following window appears:

  1. Press the 'Exit' button.
  2. You should now see two icons in your PC's system tray: The icon displayed on the right is the Palm Hotsync icon, and the one on the left is the Pylon Anywhere icon.
  3. Now, to install the Pylon Anywhere software to the Treo, click the HotSync button on the USB cable connecting the Treo to your PC.
  4. Once the HotSync is complete, you should see 2 new applications in your Application Launcher on the Treo:
    1. Pylon
    2. SyncMail

(Note that you'll have to scroll down a bit to see these 2 applications.)

  1. Disconnect the cable between the PC and the Treo.

 

Part 2 – Your first Wireless Synchronization between the Treo and your Thoughtbus Mailbox

 

  1. If you don't see an antenna and 'signal bars' in the home menu of the Treo, then Wireless Mode is 'Off'.  Press and hold the Treo’s ‘Power’ button to turn Wireless Mode to ‘On’.  (Or place a phone call to turn Wireless Mode to 'On'.)
  2. Next, open the new 'Pylon' application from the Application Launcher on the Treo, and press the 'Sync' link.
  3. The 'First Synchronization' window appears. Here you can select 'refresh' to replace the Treo's calendar items with those from your Thoughtbus mailbox, or you can press 'merge' to keep your calendar items and add the ones from your Thoughtbus mailbox to them.
  4. Next, if you are returned to the Pylon Anywhere page, and you see the status ‘No user name specified’, then:
    1. Press the ‘menu’ key, then select ‘Setup’, then ‘Connection Settings…’.
    2. In the ‘User name:’ field, enter ‘ENOMIA\’ followed by your Thoughtbus username. (On the Treo, to type a ‘\’, press the ‘/’ key, then press the ‘Alt’ key and select ‘\’ from the pop-up menu.)
    3. In the ‘Server name/IP:’ field, enter ‘pylon.Thoughtbus.com’.
    4. Press ‘OK’.
    5. From the Pylon Anywhere page, press the ‘Sync’ link again.
  5. Next, you'll be asked to scribble on the screen to generate an encryption key. (Keep scribbling until the Progress bar completes.)
  6. You may next see a window 'Connect to the Internet'. If you do, check the 'Never ask me again.' checkbox and press the 'Yes' button.
    1. Next the 'Service Connection Progress' window displays, and it should succeed.
  1. Next the 'Sync in progress' window appears. You can press the 'Details' button to get the specifics on the synchronization.
  2. The first time synchronizing, the 'Authentication' window appears – enter your Thoughtbus password here and press 'OK'.
  3. Synchronization will continue, and it will finish on the Treo once all updates are complete.
  4. Back in the web browser, the following window is displayed:

  1. Press the 'Download Complete' link. The following window will appear:

  1. From this window, you can:
    1. Enable SMS push (note that most cellular providers charge per SMS message; this can get expensive): click the 'Palm OS – Handspring Treo 600…' link.
    2. Configure what to push, and the schedule for push: click the 'Push Settings' link.
    3. Update your time-zone and other mailbox directory information: click the 'General User Information' link.
    4. Determine how many days of data to retain on the Treo: press the 'Performance Settings' link.
  1. Logout by pressing the 'Logout' link. You can always return to this window by browsing to 'https://palm.Thoughtbus.com'…
  2. At this point, your Treo configuration is fully setup. Try sending a test message to yourself via Outlook to verify receipt on the Treo, and then from the Treo to verify receipt on Outlook. Note that it may take up to 15 minutes from setup for the account to be fully enabled.  If you cannot send emails to or from the Treo after 15 minutes, please contact Thoughtbus Support.
